Bio

Sydney Musinde

Sydney Musinde is a composer whose work explores themes of memory, identity, and transformation through contemporary classical music. Drawing from cinematic sound worlds and expressive lyricism, her compositions seek to create immersive musical experiences that resonate deeply with performers and audiences alike.

Raised in Columbus, Ohio, Sydney's artistic journey began through dance before expanding into music. Her early experiences across multiple artistic disciplines—including instrumental performance, theatre, and songwriting—cultivated a creative versatility that continues to shape her compositional voice today.

Throughout her musical training, she studied a diverse range of instruments, including viola, violin, cello, piano, harp, flute, and guitar. This broad instrumental background informs her understanding of color, texture, and performer collaboration within her compositions.

Although initially pursuing performance, Sydney discovered her greatest artistic fulfillment through composition. Drawn to the spontaneous creation of melodies, lyrics, and musical ideas, she recognized composition as a natural extension of her creative instincts and chose to dedicate herself to developing that craft.

Following her graduation from Reynoldsburg High School, Sydney relocated to Arizona to attend Arizona State University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Music Theory and Composition. She additionally studies Popular Music with an emphasis in Audio Engineering and Musical Theatre, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary artistic practice. A recipient of the Provost's Scholarship, Sydney has also been named to the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters.

Her compositions blend contemporary techniques with accessible musical language, emphasizing emotional depth, lyrical expression, and vivid musical imagery. During her first year of collegiate study, her work was featured in a reading session with the Borromeo String Quartet. She was commissioned to co-compose the score for the student film Fade Into Her and to create vocal arrangements for a senior recital, including a transposition and arrangement of A Sound of Loom (A Willow Song) by Lee Wonju Lee and a newly arranged three-part (S-S-T) setting of Bella Ciao. She also co-produced a composition studio recital, demonstrating her commitment to both creative and collaborative artistic leadership.

An active collaborator, Sydney has worked alongside students and performers across disciplines, including Musical Theatre, the ASU Gospel Choir, and numerous emerging artists throughout Arizona and Ohio.

Among her earliest compositional achievements was the creation of Changes of Seasons, a community-engaged work developed through a partnership with Freedom a la Carte, an organization dedicated to supporting survivors of human trafficking. Premiered on February 18, 2024, at the Summit Campus Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio, the project culminated in a public educational event that combined advocacy, community dialogue, and live performance. Through the composition, Sydney sought to musically depict the emotional complexities of transformation, resilience, and healing, bringing together student musicians to help realize the work. The performance invited audiences to engage with issues of human trafficking through both education and artistic expression.

Sydney is currently expanding her catalog of chamber and solo works, developing a new work for brass trio, preparing for the 2026 season of DBRLabs, and pursuing additional commissioned projects throughout Arizona. Through her work, she seeks to create meaningful musical experiences that inspire reflection, curiosity, and connection while contributing to the evolving landscape of contemporary classical music.
